department of political science

Welcome to the online home of the Department of Political Science at Florida State University. We are a growing department and proud of our strength in research and our national reputation!

Our faculty publish regularly in the discipline’s leading research journals and academic presses (see recent publications). A ranking of political science departments based on publications in research journals places our Department 9th among all U.S. public universities. We believe our success stems from the stimulating and collaborative research environment we have created in the department. The Department has also recently established a new Center for the Study of Democratic Performance (CSDP) to help support the research activities of the Department's faculty and graduate students.

Our standing in the profession is important to us, and we continue to build. Over the last few years we have added nationally-recognized senior and promising junior faculty in each of our core fields.

The Department offers graduate programs with instruction in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, public policy, methods of political analysis, and formal theory. Our doctoral program is structured to maximize students' opportunities to collaborate with faculty, and to develop their own research program. Our Ph.D’s have been placed in excellent universities and colleges throughout the country and abroad (see our alumni list). Students interested in our graduate programs can find detailed information about our programs, opportunities for financial support, and the application process in the section labeled prospective graduate students.

At the undergraduate level, over 1,300 students are pursuing their Bachelors degrees in Political Science. Students choose from courses on American Politics, International Relations, Comparative Politics, Public Policy, Political Theory, and Public Administration to satisfy the requirements of our major. The Department participates in the University's Honors Program and offers a Research Intensive Bachelor’s Certificate, a program of study offered to a select group of students to provide hands on research experience with faculty and graduate students in the department. Internships provide our students with direct experience in the political and policy process, and we offer a range of courses that satisfy the University's liberal studies and multicultural course requirements.
