Dean's Report - Fall 2012
I am pleased to report that our research programs are receiving international acclaim. The 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities reports that Social Sciences at Florida State is ranked 44th among the top 200 universities in the world. . The same report shows that among U.S public universities social sciences at FSU is ranked 20th.
What is most gratifying is that in 2007 we were ranked in the 51-75 range and moved up despite the fact that the university suffered budget cuts throughout that period. This improved ranking is an extraordinary testimony to our faculty.
Our College of Social Sciences and Public Policy performed particularly well in the number of academic articles published in top professional journals. This ranking gives impressive quantitative testimony to the research activity that is at the core of the high quality training we provide for our doctoral students. While we are immensely proud of this accomplishment, our Ph.D. programs are only one of the three pillars that support this great College.
We take equal pride in our programs that enrich the academic life and professional opportunities for undergraduate students. Our excellent applied master’s degree programs provide professional training for students desiring careers outside of academia while our Undergraduate Enhancement Program helps students to "get more than a degree" through research opportunities, internships, study and service abroad, an economic literacy initiative, and the Social Science Scholars program.
We are grateful to the alumni and friends who have contributed to these fine accomplishments. Resting on our laurels is not an option, however. We will continue to foster excellence in research as we maintain our efforts to improve the educational experience of undergraduates.
With very best wishes for 2013,
