Dean's Report - Spring 2013
We are about to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the College’s founding in 1973 when our six departments were spun out of the College of Arts and Sciences. Since then the number of students graduating from the college has grown three times faster than the university total. We have so much to be proud of: Social Sciences at FSU are clearly stronger than any other university within the state, our research reputation in 2012 is ranked 44th in the world and among the top 20 among U.S. public universities, and our “get more than a degree” initiative is providing our undergraduates with exciting opportunities that help prepare them for productive lives after graduation.
I am also very optimistic that we will be able to build on these accomplishments in the future. The Florida legislature passed a bill that identifies the University of Florida and FSU as preeminent universities within the State University System. These added state resources will allow us to add prominent scholars to our faculty. At the same time we hope that our “get more than a degree” initiative will continue to grow with the help of our alumni and friends.
The end of the school year is a time to reflect on our student successes. The Mock Trial team won the national American Mock Trial Association national championship—the first Florida school to accomplish this feat. The nine member team had six members from our political science department. They beat numerous Ivy League schools as well a mock trial national powers such as Duke (last year’s winner), the University of Chicago and Cal Berkeley. Once again, our students show that they can compete with the best in the nation.
Attending end of the year events of the World Affairs Program and the Social Science Scholars was a special treat for me. I was once again impressed how much these students benefit from engagement in these programs. They are very grateful for the support the college provides and they are acutely aware that these funds are the result of the generosity of our alumni and friends.
